"Bokura No" Excerpt

A: "I have trouble watching action movies. It's not that I don't like exciting battle sequences. It's just that in those movies, most of those scenes feature random people falling victim to what happens. That's not even a problem, either. If those events were real, that kind of stuff would happen. It would be crazy to pretend they wouldn't.

But the people watching the movie don't ever spare a second thought for all of those anonymous extras who die. Instead, they are extremely affected by the death of the main characters. To me, the main character dying, and the poor people who die on the side of the road are the same. They're all people who are living and thinking in a fictional world. There shouldn't be any difference between them. But as long as the hero survives and laughs with the girl at the end, it's a happy ending. And if the hero dies, it's a sad ending. I don't understand how that works. To me, if any single person in the movie dies, it's a sad ending. The only difference between those sad endings, is if the fictional hero ends the movie feeling pain for the fictional masses who die. But that hardly ever happens. Why do the hero-style main characters always end the movie smiling and laughing? Why does the audience think that's a happy ending?"

B: "I think I understand what you mean. What you're saying is also applicable to the fictional bad guys and enemies too, isn't it?"

A: "Yes."

B: "If you assume that movies are made for pure enjoyment, then you'd want them to end happily, even if it is a lie. Even if someone in this fictional world would be crying over what happened, as long as you don't depict it, it doesn't become a problem. It goes unrecognized."

A: "That's what I don't like about it. I think if everyone could normally understand those things, there would be fewer problems in the world. I might be doing the right thing, but the other side might be, too. It might be sad for me, but it might be sad for them, too."

B: "Is that why you can't fight? I see. True, most people tend to side with their in-group, their part of society. They try to assign responsibility for their personal situation and choices to outside influences. People who can't stand in another man's shoes will unconsciously choose to protect their own people. I don't have a problem with that, but it looks like you do. This might surprise you, but soldiers actually think quite a bit about the things you're speaking of.

In your case, there's another world to think about, but for us soldiers, it's another nation... A competing country is the enemy. And especially in today's world, it's quite common to meet soldiers from possible 'enemy' nations. Sometimes you'll even get to meet their families. And then you think, there might come a time when I have to kill this person. There might come a time when this family will hate me, for what I must do. But when that time comes and I'm faced with that choice, I will kill him or her without blinking. Do you know why?

I hate to say this, but what the TV and media tell you is wrong. The value of our lives is not equal. It just isn't true. From a very broad perspective it might be so, but because we all have personal emotions, our individual views are all unequal. Anyone who says they're still the same is making exceptions for their own life. I believe that life is important. Very much so. But there is an order to its importance.

People might be sad when a dolphin dies, but you won't find many who cry when a livestock pig is killed. This is because they assign importance to these things. That's why, when faced with a choice between the death of a friend and the death of a stranger, I will always choose the death of a stranger.

This is rather paradoxical, but all life is a Holon that exists as part of a whole. If only one of two is going to survive, it doesn't particularly matter to the whole which one it is. This is in line with what you said.

So if there was you, and another person, and one of you had to die, you would choose yourself. There's nothing that says the other person can't be someone you care about. In that case, I think it says a lot about your good side. But I get the feeling that your viewpoint exists as a reaction to other people, people who don't understand, or even try.

On the surface, my views are the same as those people you hate, but it's not exactly the same. All human beings given life are also burdened with karma and responsibility for how they treat life.

You will not find a single person who lives without stealing the lives of others. We eat plants, and we eat animals. Even Christ and the Buddha survived upon other living beings. You must accept this and understand it before you sit back and glorify life.

Especially now, when surviving today is so simple and matter-of-face, people tend to forget. They forget what it means, to eat a pig. They say all life is equal, but how much life is consumed to keep them alive everyday? This doesn't just apply to other living things. You also can say it about human beings. The fact that you are alive, means that someone may have died. I think you're smart, you understand what this means.

I think that adults should understand and talk about this more, but they're all too concerned with themselves to bother. The reason you're here today, is because you and your ancestors stood atop a mountain of other lives. That is the karma that all living things must bear. I'm not looking down on life at all. I don't think that meaningless killing is a good thing. But I don't think the killing that takes place to keep you and the people you care about alive should be ignored or downplayed, either.

That's why we have to live for the sake of all the lives we've sacrificed. That is the responsibility that all living things must bear. Your life does not belong only to you. It is also the form of the countless lives that have ended to keep you alive. It doesn't matter whether you like it or not. You are already supported by sacrifice.

So you should be thankful for that, and use the life you were given to the fullest extent. That karma and responsibility cannot be avoided. And if you say, I'm going to live the easy life, or I didn't want to be born, then you should choose death for yourself. It means you can cut down on the number of lives that will be sacrificed for a wasted life.

Now, to change the topic just a bit, I believe that I've caused a lot of trouble for many people in my life. But I can't make it up to all of them. There are many things you can never take back. But the one thing you can always do in return, is to devote yourself to help someone else as best you can.

I guess, to rephrase that, it's just to live in a way that you can accept and be proud of."

春咲きsentimental

below is an excerpt from the ending of a song that came out awhile ago, decided to write my own translation of its lyrics, because its a rather nice song, with beautifully written words. (no other interpretations)

Plastic Tree - Harusaki Sentimental (youtube)

舞い散る桜で君の顔が見えなくなる
In the twirling and scattering petals of the Cherry Blossom, I lose sight of your face
淡い夢が覚めてくから、毀れるのは涙で~
In the after-wakening from this shallow dream, what that has fallen are tears

鮮やかな色で 音を立てて 桜が咲く
With freshly bright colors... with echoing notes... the Cherry Blossom blooms
大切だった物は全部、この木の下に 埋めていくよ
All that is important to me, underneath this tree, I shall bury it
目の前には、分かれる春
In front of me is the Spring which we went apart
見上げたなら、花降る春
When I look above me, it is a Spring of descending flower

僕の上に 僕の上に そっと・・・
Onto me... (the flowers fall) onto me... softly

waywardness

I do not find it kind, for one to dispense another's request, however impossible and wayward, but presented with humility and sincerity, and made fun of in a condescending manner. I choose to ignore it, and shall offload in this light possible, to quench conflict between my internal resolutions.

Kurikaeshi

"Don't open the door to the last room, Roland";
Many people seem discontent with such an ending for the gunslinger,
but to me it is just an allusion to life.

strange pieces.

reconstituted.

kakera kakera... I suppose the scatterings form a complete puzzle... But what happens when the pieces of the jigsaw don't fit together... Like the broken colours flooded through the rays off a fallen setting... And the winding music chimes that give rise to no rhythm, hidden beats, and mythical notes.

Why do people talk in circles around their words? I would think that they do not want to be understood. But why even do they communicate? Is it a form of relivation of their thought processes, their inner-pondering? Therefore, they do not want to be understood easily. Strange thoughts, weird emotions, but you might be better off questioning the purpose. No answer to all theorithical possibilities. Random mutterings, it is a psychological examination of a child, when given a picture to sketch, to sketch the pictures and drawings of its thinkings, to put the thoughts into graphical notions. So bio-electrical notions get converted into ink upon paper, crayon upon graphite, heat onto matter.

Inner workings and outer purpose. To which servitude? How can we achieve the balance between selfishness and servitude, pleasure/enjoyment with hardship/suffering. Many questions, no answers, only a heart to ponder and experience. So tasting bitterness, but how sour is the apple that has turned rotten? Do the maggots that eat up the decay actually clean up the rotten apple, or hasten the decomposition. Of what measurement should we judge this by? Rate, quantity, time or beauty?

Perhaps its better to rejudge this from a relative-isometrical viewpoint - that perhaps this is a iteration and restatement of confusion. No, the argument is not about the entity, or the relative 'correctness' of this preempt by society's rules. The argument is lost within the question, as aligned with the theme.

Pausible a suggestion for consideration. That the restrictiveness of Man, (or third-dimension animate beings that some term themselves) the restrictivenss to glance into the future. But the constrain by time, another quantity, what is the possible working of such an free reign? Impossible to work out, as possible lower-dimension inanimative entities have no conception of us. Bitterness and hesitation of the uncertain future - surely a weakness/quality of Man. Or perhaps not all there is to it?

Lol... write halfway dun wanna write liao.. Shall resume normal speech. Saraba.
